ELKHART, Indiana (Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary) — A distinctive cloverleaf-shaped house nestled among trees on the edge of the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) campus in Elkhart, Indiana, has been renovated and is now available to the public for use as a daytime retreat space.
Formerly known as “Poustinia House,” it was the home of Clarence Bauman, a former professor of ethics at AMBS, and his spouse, Alice Bauman. Clarence designed the space to be a hermitage — a place “set apart” for solitude, contemplation and prayer in the tradition of Russian spirituality. “Poustinia” is Russian for “desert.” […]
