Rev. Dr. David P. Gushee is the author of Defending Democracy From Its Christian Enemies
from an announcement by Eastern Mennonite University
Are you concerned about the state of US political discourse and its religious elements? Are you anxious about the upcoming election?
As we step deeper into 2024, many of us are thinking (and worrying) anew about how to pursue community and seek justice in a world of division—not least given the challenges this particular election cycle presents.
In this spirit, Eastern Mennonite University is eager to welcome the Rev. Dr. David P. Gushee to campus for three events in February:
- Tues, Feb 6: preaching in the weekly chapel service at Eastern Mennonite Seminary (11a, Martin Chapel, free and open to the public)
- Tues, Feb 6: a public lecture on his new book, Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies (6:30p, Martin Chapel, free and open to the public)
- Thurs, Feb 8: a workshop for church leaders on “Leading with Clarity and Compassion in a Polarized Election Year” (1p, Strite Conference Center, $89 pre-registration required)
All three events will be accessible online. The two public events on Feb 6 will stream live via the EMS Facebook page, and paid registration for the Feb 8 workshop includes the option to join the live, on-campus session via Zoom. A limited number of copies of Gushee’s newest book, Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies, will be available for purchase at these events.
Gushee is a seasoned minister and a noted Christian ethicist, holding distinguished teaching positions at both Mercer University and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and he is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of more than 28 books and over 175 academic book chapters, journal articles, and reviews.
If you are concerned about the state of US political discourse and its religious elements, if you are curious about strategies for leading with conviction and compassion in the coming year and beyond, join us for these events next month—and register now for the Feb 8 workshop!
